A buffer or barricade of any sort by your tree can prevent root compaction from vehicles or anything else. Root compaction has been the death of many a tree.
When your tree is surrounded by grass, it's a great idea to place some mulch around the trunk (but not touching the bark). Hardwood mulch for hardwood trees. Even a small ring of mulch around your tree will provide significant benefits.
When pruning tree limbs, stop cutting the limb at the point where the limb starts flaring into the trunk. This is the branch collar. When in doubt of where to stop cutting, remember it is better to leave a stub than injure the trunk.
